10 Cynical Questions
The following are 10 questions that every New York Mets fan should be asking this offseason.
1. Why are the Chicago Cubs so willing to part with Matt Clement despite fantastic stuff, a solid ERA (for a hitters park) and high strikeout numbers?
2. If Al Leiter is supposedly "done" why are the Phillies, Yankees and Indians all getting in line to make him an offer?
3. Is Magglio Ordonez the biggest gamble of this offseason?
4. What would have more of a positive managerial impact in 2005, Willie Randolph's track record and familiarity with New York, or Rudy Jaramillo being bi-lingual?
5. Is David Wright ready to step up and lead the team offensively this year?
6. Is Kris Benson the best way to spend $30 Million dollars?
7. With the injury risks of Jose Reyes and Kazuo Matsui, why wouldn't the Mets consider bringing back Wilson Delgado, who hit .292 with a .750 OPS last year as a part time replacement?
8. How is Victor Zambrano's arm?
9. Who will be a Met at the end of the 2005 season, Jason Phillips or Vance Wilson?
10. Where in the world is Bobby V?

21 Comments:
1. A very good question. IMHO t has something to do with competitive makeup. I read several stories in the Chicago media that questioned his heart and his makeup in pressure situations. But they are rumors of course.
2. Obviously Leiter is NOT done, and it looks Omar won't pander to Met fan's irrational dislike of the guy. So what he limited to 6 innings.
Al started 28 times for the Mets in 2004. He got a "No Decision"(ND) 6 times when he pitched 5 innings or more and gave up 1 earned run or less. He got an ND 2 times when he pitched 5 innings or more and gave up 2 earned runs, and he got one ND for a 6 inning, 3ER performance.
He got a ND only once when a loss would have been expected, in a 4 inning, 4ER performance, and in all his 10 wins, only in two did he give up 3 ERs, so no cheap wins for Al in 2004.
Two of his losses came when he gave up 3 ERs, and one of his losses he gave up 1 ER.
Things break both ways, but for Al, in 2004, they only broke against him. Not one cheap win, and if you only consider his 2ER or less performances where he did NOT get a win, he got 8 NDs and 1 loss. If he was a reasonable 5-4 instead of 0-9 in those 9 games he'd be 15-8, or 15-7 for 2004.
That's why everyone wants him!
3. Is Magglio Ordonez the biggest gamble of this offseason?
Without a doubt. It is a shame, but I'd stay away from him. Knees rarely get better.
4. What would have more of a positive managerial impact in 2005, Willie Randolph's track record and familiarity with New York, or Rudy Jaramillo being bi-lingual?
The latter. In addition, Jaramillo is much more in your face than the corporate Randolph, which is more suited for the Mets.
5. Is David Wright ready to step up and lead the team offensively this year?
Yes, but I'd put him in the 2 hole, or in the 6-7th spots. Too much needless pressure if he goes 3rd or 5th.
6. Is Kris Benson the best way to spend $30 Million dollars?
No. But I don't think it'll take much more than $20M for 3 years.
7. With the injury risks of Jose Reyes and Kazuo Matsui, why wouldn't the Mets consider bringing back Wilson Delgado, who hit .292 with a .750 OPS last year as a part time replacement?
That's a great idea.
8. How is Victor Zambrano's arm?
The Met's have him on the 40, so that's a positive sign.
9. Who will be a Met at the end of the 2005 season, Jason Phillips or Vance Wilson?
Wilson has established himself as a career backup catcher. Phillips still has the potential to be an everyday catcher, so he'll likely be traded. I say the Mets will resign Piazza for 2006 and beyond for short money, and he'll split time with Wilson.
10. Where in the world is Bobby V?
In Japan. The place you go when you publically bad mouth an owner in an employment field with only 30 possible opennings. It'll be years before he manages in the majors again...if ever.
1. Easy, they already have money committed to Wood, Maddux, Zambrano, and Prior. Then have Sirgio Miltre, Angel Guzman, Bobby Brownlie, etc. in their minors. They are deep in starting pitchers in the top of their system and they also have Glendon Rusch who preformed admirably in 2004. They are looking to save money in the fifth spot of the rotation instead of spending 6 to 8 mill on Clement. They want to make a run at Beltran, which they might not be able to do with Clement still there. I did not read anything negative about Clement this past season to make me think he is trouble. When you look at clearing payroll and you feel you have capable pitchers to step into the #5, why not let Clement go and put money into your pen/outfield? They need to make up for lost production from Alou somehow. (Hey OB, did you read my post yesterday?)
2. Let them have Leiter. He may not be done, his almost 1:1 K:BB ratio is scary. He is OK if he is the only guy pushing 40, but he Mets have Glavine at 39 and Trachsel at 34. The Mets need to get younger. Whether that is keeping Trachsel and not Leiter or the other way around, it has to be done.
3. I would have to say so. No other player of his stature is coming of in injury that ended his season. Doctor's should be able to figure it out if he's healthy and he'll have to prove his knee in workouts/physicals, so I leave that the professionals.
4. I'm not sure what track record you speak of for Randolph. In fact I'd say Jaramillo has more of track record being a hitting coach for a decade that produced results and worked with some great hitters. Yes it was a hitter's park, but sill a job that is quantifiable, unlike 3rd base coach or bench coach for one year. Yes Willie has NY experience, but that is it. Bi-lingual is not the only positive Jaramillo has over Willie.
5. Dude is money. I say yes. Wish we had seven more of him.
6. Nope. If I had my choice (which you know by now) I'd take Clement over Benson in heartbeat and let Benson walk. I'm not against Benson, but I think the Mets could benefit from Clement greatly.
7. Moot point. They'll have Danny Garcia or Jeff Keppinger if we need someone. If either Matsui or Reyes is out, it won't matter who is in. Delgado is no difference make like Chone Figgins off the bench. Besides if they get Woodward, he'll be fine. Letting Delgado walk is the least of anyones worries. He'll be around again next year if you need him. Trust me.
8. This is the question of the century.
9. Stay with Phillips.
10. Eating Sushi.
1. Why are the Chicago Cubs so willing to part with Matt Clement despite fantastic stuff, a solid ERA (for a hitters park) and high strikeout numbers?
Clement is sort of a V. Zambrano or Benson type guy, great stuff but inconsistent. With Wood and C. Zambrano maybe the Cubbies don't want to write a huge check to a guy who loses more than he wins. At age 30, you'd like to see something better than 69-75, 4.34 career ERA for the kind of contract he is going to command in this lousy market. Let's hope the Mets see it the same way.
2. If Al Leiter is supposedly "done" why are the Phillies, Yankees and Indians all getting in line to make him an offer?
I don't know who said Leiter was "done". His numbers speak for themselves. As long as you don't mind 5.5 innings, he is effective. For the right team, with a strong middle reliever bullpen, he is a great option for a year or two.
3. Is Magglio Ordonez the biggest gamble of this offseason?
Possibly, but my guess is that no team will sign a new deal without protecting themselves with either insurance or by making the deal incentive and performance heavy.
4. What would have more of a positive managerial impact in 2005, Willie Randolph's track record and familiarity with New York, or Rudy Jaramillo being bi-lingual?
It's a trick question. Neither matters worth a cr@p. We should have looked for a veteran manager with NL experience.
5. Is David Wright ready to step up and lead the team offensively this year?
A qualified yes. I think he will settle into the 3 hole and be there for a decade. But I hope he has a lot of competition for offensive leadership.
6. Is Kris Benson the best way to spend $30 Million dollars?
It is a thin pitching market, but the Mets are going to look awfully stupid if Benson signs with the Braves or the Yankees. The fact that it is dragging on gets curiouser and curiouser...
7. With the injury risks of Jose Reyes and Kazuo Matsui, why wouldn't the Mets consider bringing back Wilson Delgado, who hit .292 with a .750 OPS last year as a part time replacement?
Personally, I think we need a third starting caliber middle infielder. While Delgado had his moment in the sun, he is a career minor leaguer, and I don't think you can count on those numbers over time. Royce Clayton might be an interesting addition who would consider a non-starting role.
8. How is Victor Zambrano's arm?
To the extent this helps, it certainly is included in the fervent nightly prayers of a lot of Met's execs.
9. Who will be a Met at the end of the 2005 season, Jason Phillips or Vance Wilson?
Vance has a job while Piazza is here. When Mike leaves, he becomes expendable, since he falls into the sort of 80 percent starter category. If the Mets were to trade Mike and land, say, Varitek or Kendall, I think they'd back them up with an inexpensive kid and move Vance in a trade.
Phillips probably has a bench job until he starts hitting, and then maybe someone will want him. But as a young, cheap player with some pop and two positions, he also makes a nice toss in if we make a trade with a small market team.
10. Where in the world is Bobby V?
Japan, in contractual handcuffs, gnashing his teeth.
