Your Move Omar
With the hot stove season just around the corner newly appointed General Manager Omar Minaya is getting ready to hit the free agent market. Let's review the facts:
- Owner Fred Wilpon wants a winner. The sooner the better.
- The Mets are strapped with some aging vets that can't be easily shed.
- Minaya has good ties with many Latin American players (and coaches).
- The Mets have money to spend, especially with the birth of the Mets Network.
- Minaya wants to make a splash and establish his prowess.
- The Mets are in dire need of increasing ticket sales.
Wilpon will increase payroll this year and Minaya I am sure made that one of the key reasons he'd be willing to come here. He's probably had as much as one can take when it comes to being cheap beyond reason. Minaya's player evaluation skills have always been solid and Fred will probably entrust Minaya in that regard more than he has with previous GM's.
I have resisted making "predictions" thus far, because predictions are mathematically bound to fail and make one look bad. On the other hand, the unadulterated glory that comes from being right on a prediction is just too much to resist!
Phase 1: Longshots
Out of the gates, the Mets will probably extend a phone call or two out to Scott Boras regarding Carlos Beltran. The Mets would have to be insane not to atleast investigate the scene here. Boras will no doubt initially request something grotesque, outdated and laughable along the lines of $20 Million per season for 8 years.
In the current economy those numbers wont even make it through the initial phone call and teams will quickly be talking in the $15 Million per season range and option years, etc. I expect the Mets to put in a bid but chances are they fall out of the running quickly when its made known that Beltran isn't all that interested in playing for the lowly New York Mets.
In addition, the Mets will probably put out feelers on Matt Clement and Carl Pavano but come to the conclusion that Kris Benson is their best bet. If Benson has no interest in the Mets then he may sign with Atlanta, but he'd get less money to do so. In the end, since I think Benson is really only in this for the money, he'll re-sign with the Mets, making his wife (and his bank account) happy.
Phase 2: Pop.
I think the Mets will decide to let Richard Hidalgo walk. They may offer him some sort of lowball contract where he can be used as a 400 at-bat outfielder but chances are he gets a better offer from some team that plays in a bandbox and goes there.
The Mets will then extend serious invitations to free agents Carlos Delgado and Magglio Ordonez, and in all honesty, I think they have a decent chance of landing both ... especially if Rudy Jaramillo is the new Mets manager.
Delgado provides the one thing the Mets need the most: A left-handed hitter that gives you power, average and the ability to get on base 40% of the time. Delgado will be 32 when next season starts and as a result I think he can command a 4-year contract from the Mets with the final year being in some form of option.
Magglio Ordonez may decide to sign with the Mets if they can offer him a solid financial one or two-year package. I have my doubts on Magglio simply because Boras may remind Magglio of how hard it is to hit at Shea (and the negative repurcussions that could have on his next contract).
Cliff Floyd will probably stick around simply because he's still a productive hitter when healthy. He carries an OBP well over .350 regularly and gives you an .800+ OPS most of the time. There is an outside chance that the Mets may try to move him to Anaheim in exchange for Jose Guillen, which in all honesty could be a win/win situation for both teams.
Although I love the idea of Todd Helton patrolling first base for the Mets, I do not think it will happen. I have heard much about Sosa coming to the Mets, but I can't see that happening either.
Phase 3: Minutia.
Minutia is a fun word. This is the part where:
The Mets let John Franco retire.
The Mets look to trade away Mike Stanton.
The Mets look to acquire some bullpen arms.
The Mets look to strengthen the bench.
The Mets look to acquire a solid backup middle infielder.
The Rotation:
- Tom Glavine (L)
- Al Leiter (L)
- Steve Trachsel (R)
- Kris Benson (R)
- Victor Zambrano (R)
- SS - Jose Reyes (S)
- 2B - Kaz Matsui (S)
- RF - Magglio Ordonez (R)
- 1B - Carlos Delgado (L)
- C - Mike Piazza (R) -- Jason Phillips and/or Vance Wilson as backups
- LF - Cliff Floyd (L) -- or Jose Guillen (R) or Victor Diaz (R)
- CF - Mike Cameron (R)
- 3B - David Wright (R)

OB
Thanks for summarizing all the uncertainty that surrounds our Team this off-season. I'll guess that the dominoe effect will prevail and that one move will quickly lead to another.
How can you not expect me tyo take ezception with Wright hitting 8th? And how can you have Reyes hitting lead off instaed of Matsui?
Matsui has a higher OBP than Reyes.
Wright has better plate discipline than Reyes. Let Reyes hit eighth until he earns the right to hit further up int he order.
Agee's Catch
I think your scenario is realistic. moreso than most ive seen. Delgado and ordonez dont have any serious suitors that can outbid the Mets. The hispanic connection should help as well. I wouldnt be surprised if this is the mets lineup in 2005, however reyes and matsui at the top of the order arent very good obp guys and thats a big problem.
That's what I think will happen, not what I would personally do. Matsui should never lead off. He hit .311 in the #2 spot and .234 in the leadoff spot last year. He's clearly more comfortable (and productive) when not leading off.
I would probably bat Wright leadoff until someone else stepped up (Reyes).
By the way, Henry is me (Old Backstop). Dern thing goes by my username. -- Old B
I like the new digs. I'm still 100% for the Mets showing Leits out the door and bring in Clement. I have a unhealthy desire for him to be a Met.
Loooooooove the new design! I think you're totally on the mark except for Delgado, unless he's still a free agent at the start of spring training and ends up signing a I-Rod-type one year deal.
I do worry about the Mets giving a huge contract to Ordonez. If they do make a play for him I hope it's not for more than a year with an option (maybe one that automatically vests with certain milestones, PA's etc..)
Yeah definitely a realistic play OB. I totally agree with you on the Delgado scenario, I would do that in a heartbeat. We need a lefty power bat and he could definitely fill that role nicely. As for my lineup, I would still have Reyes and Matsui hit 1-2. Although Reyes as of now hasn't developed the OBP you would like at the top of the order, I think you can utilize his speed best there. If you drop him down in the order you run the risk of taking that away from him with slower guys on base in front of him. After Reyes and Matsui I'd go Wright-Delgado-Guillen(traded Floyd for him)-Piazza-Cameron-Diaz. I'll take my lumps with that lineup and save some money and make a run at Pavano/Clement/Perez or someone else in a trade.
I did not realize that Delgado was a decent defender. He's not a plau defender, but I had the impression that he was a minus defender. His stick is powerfull, but I wonder how he'll fit in the NYC clubhouse with the "won't stand for the national anthem" political stance. That could be real ugly in NYC if he doesn't play REAL well. I think he'll sign with the O's, or the Marlins.
The Denver Post has a story running today that again mentions Helton, and this time O'dowd is quoting as saying he's not focusing on moving Helton, but he'll listen to offers. The Mets have the financial ability to eat his entire contract, but any GM worth a lick could get the Rockies to eat at least 20% of his deal. For once, in the last 6 years(Piazza) we'd have a marquee player during THEIR prime.
After adding Helton's lefty bat, the Mets would be free to deal Floyd. I'd target Drew as his replacement. Drew's a gold glove fielder, who's got a great lefty stick for Shea. He works counts terrifically, and like Helton, is a linedrive type hitter, as opposed to the flyball style of Delgado. He's also entering the prime of his career at 29.
Reyes - SS
Matsui - 2B
Drew - RF
Piazza - C
Helton - 1B
Wright - 3B
Cameron - CF
Diaz/Valent - LF
New York Mets Plan for 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trade Glavine, Kaz Matsui, and maybe even a prospect for Vasquez
Trade for Pierre
I don’t know how, but they should. The guy is the best leadoff hitter in the game. Pairing him with Reyes would just be explosive. Furthermore Reyes does not seem like the leadoff hitter- he’s more a #2 guy.
One suggestion: Trade Floyd, Royce Ring, Victor Diaz and/or cash for Pierre and Encarnation
This could persuade marlins to trade Pierre as they get rid of his 3.6m salary and encarnation
Sign Kent for 2-3 years
Sign Sexson
Sign Clement
The Lineup:
LF – Juan Pierre
SS - Jose Reyes (S)
2B - Kent
1B - Sexson
C - Mike Piazza (R) -- Jason Phillips and/or Vance Wilson as backups
CF - Mike Cameron (R)
3B - David Wright (R)
RF - Encarnation
The Rotation:
• Vasquez
• Clement
• Kris Benson (R)
• Victor Zambrano (R)
• Steve Trachsel (R)
